NBU VMware Queries

 As you're aware, BackUp of VM's can be configured using the following :-

- VCB (Staging Required)

- VStorage API (No Staging Required)

Queries :

1) So on which version of NBU and VMware is VStorage supported

2) I would also like to know the NBU and VMware versions supported for VCB

- So what I understand is, if you have NBU 7.0 or later then only you can configure VMware backups with VStorage for ESX versions ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.0

You are correct. Below is from the admin guide.

Minimum levels for vStorage support

To use VMware vStorage, NetBackup requires the following minimum levels of

VMware servers: ESX 3.5, or VirtualCenter 2.5. NetBackup can use vStorage with

older ESX servers (such as 3.0.2) if they are behind a VirtualCenter at version 2.5

or later.

When is VCB required?

NetBackup can protect most VMware environments by means of VMware's newer

vStorage APIs, without using VCB.

VCB is required in the following cases:

Full virtual machine backup vs file-level backup

■ For backups of selected files instead of the entire virtual machine, if a

NetBackup client is not installed on the virtual machine.

■ For incremental backups that use the virtual machine backup option called

Full backup with file level incremental.

■ For the following older VMware environments:

■ ESX servers older than 3.5 if no VirtualCenter server is present.

■ For VirtualCenter servers older than 2.5.

No. vStorage API's are only currently avalaible in Netbackup 7. I would not have thought that they will be adding them in for 6.5.x

I tested the 7.0 GA with vSphere 4.1 ... it worked fine until I decided to add another vmdk
to my VM. At those time I wasn't able to backup it until I remove/re-add the VM to the policy.

When running 7.0.1 I don't have this trouble.
