Hi Experts,

I have been reading about NDMP as its going to be introduced in our Environment soon. I have few Queries.

I had gone through to the admin guide but did not understand much.

We have 2 Netapp box, 1 Master server 7.6 on windows and 1 media server on windows and need to take the backup of 2 Netapp Box.

1:- What is NDMP host? Is it a NAS filer. which has its own customized OS and we can not install NBU on it?

Its been referring on guide NetBackup software is NOT installed on NDMP hosts.

2:- How does netbackup interact with the NAS if client is not installed on NDMP hosts.

3:- Where is nbu client installed to take backup shares of NAS?

Pls help me.

Thanks,

Amit

1. Yes. NDMP host is a NAS filer and NBU cannot be installed on the filer.

2. You configure one of your media server as NDMP media server where you add the credentials for the NAS server. Instructions for different NAS vendors in this manual:
NetBackup for NDMP: NAS appliance information http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31885
This media server is used for configuration and will send backup instruction to the filer.

NBU for NDMP Admin Guide: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6456

3. To backup 'shares' from a client (with MS-Windows or Standard policy type), instead of NDMP filer with NDMP policy type, you can use any client or media server with domain access to the shares.
For CIFS shares, use Windows client or media server with MS-Windows policy type and 'Backup network drives' selected in policy.
For NFS shares, use Unix/Linux client or media server with Standard policy type and 'NFS' option selected in policy.

A little bit old now - but still of some use is the NetBackup 6.0 NDMP Reference Card:

https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH50949.html

...but the attachments do not show, so maybe try this:

Thanks Marianne.

More Queries.

1:- How would a NDMP Media server differ from other media server. What additonally does it have?

2:- What is this NAS server here?

As far as  I understood we put the NAS filer credentils on the Netbackup Master Server for validation with NDMP license on master right ?

1:- How would a NDMP Media server differ from other media server. What additonally does it have?

This is the media server that you choose to configure for NDMP backups - whether you perform remote backups or config devices for NAS filer. This is described in NBU for NDMP Admin Guide.

2:- What is this NAS server here?

The Filer.

As far as  I understood we put the NAS filer credentils on the Netbackup Master Server for validation with NDMP license on master right ?

The credentials will be stored on the master server but must added for the media server that you config as NDMP media server.
The master server can also be NDMP media server.

Some questions from my side:

Do you have any intention of ever using NDMP backup option?
Do you have a NAS filer in your environment?
If so, which make/model?
Does it have tape drives attached directly or shared in SSO config?
Have you read through the documentation that we mentioned in above posts (and 2 years ago)?

I was looking for my previous post which I could not find.

You have not answered any of my questions?

Hello Marianne,

I am sorry for replying late. As i have mentioned earlier its going to introduce soon in our environment

I think i have got much understaning of all my questions as of now after going through to the manuals

provided by you.

Now i am stuck with my last query though i got my questions answerd for this post :) about Local and direct NDMP backup.

"A local or direct NDMP backup architecture requires that a tape drive be either directly attached to a NAS device (for example, local NDMP backup) or connected via a SAN (for example, local, direct or SAN (SSO) NDMP backup). While the devices are considered “directly connected,” all scheduling and management is still handled by the NetBackup master server."

1:- What does it mean to attach NAS directly to the tape drive?

2:- Do we need to configure something on the NAS device to attach the tape drive? any steps if yes. Just and overview would be fine :)

3:- Are the steps same to configure NDMP as per excellent Below post ?

So what you have to do is:

  • enable NDMP on NAS. Run "ndmpd on" on NAS to enable NDMP daemon. If you want to enable NDMP after next boot time, add same statement into /etc/rc.
  • Allow NDMP access from media server. Run "options ndmpd.access" on NAS and check if NDMP access from media server if permitted. I assume NDMP access is not allowed by default on current ONTAP release, so you may need to run options ndmpd.access host=media_server_name". Please ensure to add same statement into /etc/rc. Also ensure to configure your NAS so that it can resolve media server's host name.
  • Add credential for NDMP host into NetBackup. Go [Media and Device Management]-[Credentials]-[NDMP hosts] and add NAS as NDMP host. Select 2nd option and enter user name and its password of NAS user.
  • Configure backup policy with NDMP type. Other settings are same as normal backup. Backup selection must be specified by NAS native path like /vol/vol1. One more thing; add your NAS with "NDMP,NDMP" host type.

1:- What does it mean to attach NAS directly to the tape drive?

Exactly what it says. Direct Fibre or SCSI connection or SAN attached where drives are zoned to Media server(s) and filer so that it can be shared via SSO.

2:- Do we need to configure something on the NAS device to attach the tape drive? any steps if yes.

Look for info in your Filer documentation or speak to your Filer Support team. This is not a backup admin's task. You only need to know that the NAS filer OS can see the tape drives.

3:- Are the steps same to configure NDMP as per excellent Below post ?

Looks correct.
But do not rely on someone else's steps only.
You need to follow steps in NAS appliance information
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31885
Find the section for the NAS filer you are adding - steps are a bit different for different vendors - one vendor needs root user, another vendor needs user name to be ndmp when adding credentials.

I only had NBU for NDMP Admin Guide: http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC6456  (much older version) the 1st time I had to configure NDMP backups.
Nothing else. No Connect, no colleagues who have done it before.
Trust me - the documentation is good. Use it.
