Need Suggestion to backup AIX encrypted files

Hello Gurus,

Could you please suggest me on this.

We have a AIX server and application team encrypting some of their data thru 3rd party encryption tool (blieve tivoli), How to take backup those encrypt data in our netbackup. Is it like our normal file backup selection backups or need any specific things to be done for taking encrypted data.

Could find any tech docs related to this. If anything please forward the link

Master : Unix - NBU 7.5.6

Client - AIX - NBU 6.5.0.3

Please provide your inputs.

If the files are already encrypted, NetBackup will back them up (just use a Standard policy). When/if you come to restore you restore as a regular file.

When the file iis restored back on the OS - it is up to you to decrypt it using your decryption tool - this is OUTSIDE NetBackup.

Any reason why this client is still on NBU 6.5?

This version ran out of support more than a year ago.
If you should experience any issues with NBU on this client, you may encounter problems logging support calls with Symantec.

Thanks Marianne, we are in progress upgrading the client to 7.5 x in our domain batch by batch. Shortly this client as well upgrade to latest one.

Is there any advise for me on this posted one.

There is no documentation that I am aware of.
Best to find out from the 3rd party encryption software vendor about recommended backup and restore methods.

As per revaroo's suggestion - do a test backup with Standard policy.

Perform test restores to ensure that data can be recovered.

Hi,

Just bit more info:

A AIX server with encrypted filesystems.(EFS).  Support team using AIX OS encryption and dump the file into other location for some purpose(not sure why). when we try (normal as you guys said above) backup completes with the status 0, but when we browse the directories it shows empty in Backup, Archive and Restore GUI.

Is EFS will be supported by our Netbackup?

Any advise.

Please enable logging on the client: Create bpbkar folder under /usr/openv/netbackup/logs. Add VERBOSE = 3 in bp.conf. Do another backup, then check the bpbkar log. If you want us to have a look, please copy the log file to bpbkar.txt and upload as File attachment.
