How Can I Easily Check if My Backup Image Data is Encrypted?

Have you ever wanted to check one of your backup images to make sure it’s encrypted?  Well with Veritas NetBackup 10.3 and our MSDP deduplication pools you can!

We’ve introduced a new utility called DedupEncryptionReport to easily check if a given backup image data stored in your MSDP deduplication pool is encrypted.

In addition, this new utility will help confirm your Key Management Service (KMS) and data encryption are performing as expected.

There is no installation needed, the utility is already there when you install NetBackup 10.2.1 and above.

  • Linux/UNIX: /usr/openv/pdde/pdcr/bin/DedupEncryptionReport
  • Windows: install_path\Veritas\pdde\DedupEncryptionReport.exe

Here’s how it works.

  1. Navigate to the directory where the utility lives.
  2. To check for MSDP storage server and KMS encryption status.
    1. DedupEncryptionReport -systemcheck
  3. To check the encryption status of a particular backup ID
    1. DedupEncryptionReport --backupid backup_id --copy copynumber [--verbose | -v]
  4. And that’s it!

NetBackup enterprise tools makes backing up, maintaining, and recovering your data easier and more secure than ever!
