with the a new Application State Capture (ASC) feature in NBU 7.5, does it still require agent installation inside the machine for application aware VM backups i.e. for Exchange and SQL?

Yes, the API contacts the NetBackup client on the exchange server to do the granular processing which is then captured during the backup - it does this before it takes the snapshot so that the gGRT information is available in the snapshot.
If you want it to also truncate the logs in Exchange you need to install the Symantec VSS provider on the client.
Pretty much the same for SQL - you need the client and the Symantec VSS provider to backup the databases
Restores are then done in the traditional way - so it is just the backup that is streamlined
Hope this helps - all details in the VMWare, Exchange and SQL 7.5 Admin Guides
