NetBackup, Windows & IBM TS3500

We have just implemented NetBackup 7 (Windows based Master & Media servers) and use an IBM TS3500 tape library with 2 x TS1120 tape drives, each with their own control path.

Windows device manager shows 2 x medium changers and 2 x tape drives.  Our SAN shows 1 library and 2 drives.

Our NDMP backups work a treat, backing up data to both drives, but we are having trouble sharing the 2nd drive for Windows client backups and always get an error message saying no drives available.

There are no errors going through the device wizard in NetBackup, but as described above the Windows based backup just fails.

In summary, we can share 1 drive between NDMP and Windows, but when we try to share the second drive the backup fails.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you added Shared Storage Option license key? That is the only way that you can share drives between media server and NDMP host. Drives can then be configured via the wizard as shared.

If you don't have SSO license key, you will have to dedicate 1 drive to NDMP and one drive to the Windows media server.

Please also remember that although drives are configured as shared, only one server can use a tape drive at any given time. So, if the NAS is using both drives for backups, there will be no drives available for the Windows server. It will have to wait until at least one drive is released by the NAS server.
