Netbackup 6.5.2 - How To Create a new media server ( HPUX 11.31 Itanium ), and Add This to Existing Master Server ( HPUX 11.23 PA RISC )

Derek_682
Level 3
Hello,

We currently have Netbackup 6.5, and our master server is running HPUX 11.23 on PARISC.

How do I create and add a media server? The new host is running HPUX 11.31 on IA64.

Thanks,
Derek 682

This may sound like a RTFM comment, but you do really have to at least jump into the installation guides for Netbackup - if you have not done so already.

Also, verify with yourself that what you are about to perform is supported. So first make sure you check out the

NetBackup (tm) 6.x Operating System Compatibility List
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/325328.htm

and worth checking your hardware/devices are on the 6.5 supported list also before even continuing.
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/284599.htm

The hard work is possibly done for you with at least the master server installed, and if this is the EMM Server also and possibly the Robot Control Host too, then even better.

From the Installation Guide here are the bullet points to take care of:

Preparing for Installation
  • License Key - add all licenses acquired for new media server onto the master server and maybe also need to add them during installation
  • Check Supportability - see above.
  • Have the correct media/software. HP-UX IA64 has separate media to PA-RISC version for netbackup server software. However share media for the ICS package
  • Configure Storage Devices for OS - present/attach tape libaries to media server (then # ioscan -funC [tape|autoch] to see you tape hardware. You might need to create special device files first. There is a technote defining how to do this.
  • Add an entry to the master server /usr/openv/netbackup/bp.conf
    SERVER=<hostname_new_media_server>
Might be worth looking at the release notes for 6.5.4 as I believe there has been some additions to and supportability for 11.31 since the release of 6.5.0 General Availability release back in August 2007

6.5.4 release notes for HPIA64

So maybe look to update your Master first to one of the update pack releases since the GA and then install your media server.
