Netbackup 7.5 - Licensing

Hi,

Hope anyone can help me on this.

My current scenario:

2x VNX 5300. Each VNX 5300 has two (2) X-Blades (NAS heads). Total of four (4) NAS heads all active at the same time.

Each VNX 5300 is a VTL itself (EMC DLT). Total of 31 Dell Blades running mix of windows 2008 R2 and Windows 2012 hyper-V

The NAS storage and VTL are located within the same disk enclosure or the same storage (I hope I'm making sense here).

I plan to deploy two (2) Backup servers.

----------------

Questions

1. I plan to use NDMP option for my NAS heads, since all four (4) NAS heads are active at the same time do I need two (2) NDMP or four (4) NDMP options?

---> As I understand my backup servers don't need to be connected to my VTL (VNX 5300)  through fibre channel. Please correct me If I am  wrong.

We are looking to execute backups that will pass through Fibre Channel network.

2. I plan to deploy two (2) backup servers. I understand I need two (2) Enterprise Server options for this. How many tape drives are supported for each server ? Do I need to purchase additional tape drive options similar to BE 2012 LEO?  (Got sevral HP MSL4048 and 2024 tape libraries)

3. I plan to get Enterprise Disk Option, how is this licensed ? Per Backup server or storage capacity ?

4. How are Hyper-V agents licensed ? per host or per vms ? Got 31 blades all running Hyper-V, Will I need 32x Hyper-V agents ?

5. We want all backups to pass through the SAN (Fibre Channel) instead of the LAN. Do I need SAN client or SAN media server for this ? How is this license per host, per vm or capacity ?

Thank,

Paul

Questions

1. I plan to use NDMP option for my NAS heads, since all four (4) NAS heads are active at the same time do I need two (2) NDMP or four (4) NDMP options?

NDMP tiered and are licensed per active controller Hence if your NAS has 4 active controllers so you should buy single NDMP tier 4 license. (Do verify with Sym representative for NDMP tiering)

2 x Backup server. (presuming it is master server , then yes 2 enterprise server license would be required

there is no tape drive complement here same as BE.

NBU charges you on per tape drive being used and shared.

e.g. 8 drive tape library with 4 drive being shared with other NBU servers

tape drive license  x 8

share storage option x 4 (per drive shared)

3. I plan to get Enterprise Disk Option, how is this licensed ? Per Backup server or storage capacity ?

Enterprise disk are licensed per front end terabyte

4. How are Hyper-V agents licensed ? per host or per vms ? Got 31 blades all running Hyper-V, Will I need 32x Hyper-V agents ?

NBU is best for Virtualization

1 x enterprise client = Per Physical hypervisor server

1 x app db pack = per physical hypervisor (protect unlimited guest vms with app abd db awareness e.g. Exchange, sql, oracle, ad, sharepoint etc.)

in your case if you have 32 Physical Hyper-V servers with xx Guest running inside ..

32 x enterprise client

If application aware ness backups are required for guest vm then instead of buying for individual guest you can buy license for physical host and protect all guest

5. We want all backups to pass through the SAN (Fibre Channel) instead of the LAN. Do I need SAN client or SAN media server for this ? How is this license per host, per vm or capacity ?

for SAN based backups enterprise client license are required

NBU offers two option

SAN media server (backups local data over SAN, no remote client streaming to SAN, no Disk based SAN backup supported)

FT media server (No local data can be backed up over SAN, only remote clients can be streamed over SAN, both disk and tape can be destination)

FT media server requires Q Logic family HBA and OS must be RHEL/SLES

This would be best if in case more number of clients are to be streamed over SAN

Hope this helps

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Really appreciate your inputs on this. If I will backup 15 TB daily, will that entail I will need 15x Enterprise Disk option ? How is SAN media server licensed? per backup server ? Thanks again..

Hi, Just an addition, If I have a Windows 2008 R2 Hyper V host with 8 VMs all running SQL. How many licenses of NetBackup Application and Database Pack Option do I need ? As I understand I only need one. Thanks, Paul

1 Enterprise Disk Optionfor 15 Front end TB ;)

SAN Media server are licensed per Media server (Enterprise Client)

Along with it you would require SSO license for number of drives being shared to these server

your assessment is correct.. You need only 1 App-DB pack per physical host

Hi,

I have windows 2008 R2 on Hyper V and two virtual cpu's installed with Active directory and database server.

How many licenses should i get? As far as i understand only one standard client/enterprise client would be sufficient or should i also need to purchase application and database license?

Thanks
