Netbackup 7 installation question

JHeaton

In a previous backup product, they wanted me to leave the tape library in an "unknown device" status within Device Manager, so that their product could install it's own device drivers.  Is that the case with Symantec, or should I install the manufacturer's drivers so that it is fully recognized within Windows?

Also, possible dumb question:  Can I install a drive array after installing Netbackup, or does it have to be there beforehand?  My logical assumption would be that yes, I can, but I just want to avoid stupid gotchas, since I don't have access to the drive array yet.

Thanks,

Joe

1. Install your manufacturer drivers and make sure they are visible in device manager, if I'm not wrong if you are using a 64 bit server there may be issues..with netbackup detecting it on it's own. if you still have issue double check the NBU7 HCL

On a related note I normally use the Symantec tape device drivers for BackupExec where is has neat dev driver wizard for installing robots/drives. NBU also has some thing like that but again if windows detects it you shouldn't need to.

2. Normally i would install any storage devices before setting up netbackup but it's just a best practice so I immediately get my STU's configured after installation of NBU ,however you can do it after netbackup is installed and it should work fine.

LEAVE it as Unknown Medium Changer.

See this TN: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH38829

2.  Ensure that the Medium Changer driver is properly loaded for the robot.

Ensure the Medium Changer driver has loaded successfully for the robot in the Windows Device Manager. The Medium Changer driver that Windows loads automatically for the robot is usually the best driver to use. Additional drivers, if available from the robot's vendor, are often not necessary or are meant for usage outside of NetBackup. It is generally okay for a robot to detect as the default "Unknown Medium Changer" in the Windows Device Manager. If a vendor driver is being used, try reverting to the standard Microsoft driver.

**** EDIT *****
Also see the following in Admin Guide II (p.98):
Do not load vendor medium-changer drivers on Microsoft Windows hosts. The default Microsoft medium-changer driver is acceptable (but is not required) for use with NetBackup.
