Hi guys, I want to upgrade my existing netbackup client 6.5.4 running on AIX to version 7. Master server and media server is already upgraded to netbackup 7 and also the windows clients have been upgraded to netbackup 7. To upgrade the AIX client is there a specific procedure or do i just run the install script and it will automatically upgrade the client. I could not find any document on the upgrade procedure and i am no AIX expert so just want to confirm. Regards, Majid.

I have not upgraded to 7 either, but have started to download the software.
All Unix clients should be contained in this download:
NetBackup_7.0_CLIENTS_GA.tar.gz
Unzip & untar the file.

Extract from NBU Installation Guide for Unix:

To upgrade clients after you have upgraded servers

1. Use one of the following methods to start the installation script:

DVD:
  • Insert the NetBackup DVD for the appropriate platform in the drive.
Check the DVD label to identify its contents.
  • If necessary, mount the DVD.
See “Mounting the software media” on page 37.
  • Enter the following command:
    cd_directory/install
The cd_directory is the path to the directory where you can access the DVD.

ESD images (downloaded files):
  • Navigate to the location where the installation images reside.
  • Enter the following command:
    ./install
 2.  When the menu selections appear, select NetBackupClient and press Enter.
The binaries that are provided for the client operating system levels represent the operating system levels on which the binaries were compiled. The binaries typically function perfectly on later versions of the operating system. For example, HP-PARISC 11.11 binaries also are used on the HP-PARISC 11.23 level of the operating system. The installation script attempts to load the appropriate binaries for your system. If the script does not recognize the local operating system, it presents choices.

3. Select the client type that you want to load and follow the prompts to install…..

I have not done 7 yet so can only give you 6.5.5 example.
you should have downloaded the file and un-tared it
so now you should see a file call NB_update.install  that is what you want to run.

./NB_update.insta

then you will see something like this

There are 3 packs available in /nim/NetBackup_patches/NB6.5.5:

(* denotes installed pack)

NB_6.5.5

NB_CLT_6.5.5

NB_JAV_6.5.5

Enter pack name (or q) [q]:

type in NB_CLT_X.X.X
and it should go.

This is the basic by hand install.

Thanks guys, i guess i got my answer. I do not see any update_install file in the Unix clients package, well i guess that is because this is a major release and not a patch update to a major release like 6.5.5 was to 6.5. So i will just have to run the install script and it will do the rest.

Cheers Netbackup Mates..
