If I Completed a migration between old master server and newer one as a hardware refresh how can I do the following:

What if after I completed the migration successfully to the new hardware and I want to configure new HP D2D appliance to be my main backup library ? Is there any recommendations and what are the steps or docmunets that shows the steps of configuring the new D2D appliance to be my main destination instead of the old tape library which will be decomissioned

Will HP D2D be connected in VTL or OST mode?

If this will be your only backup destination, have you sized the D2D big enough to satisfy long-term retention requirements?

How will you cater for DR? Replicate D2D to remote site or duplicate to physical tape to be taken offsite?

Have you asked HP for their 'best practice' documents?

Hi Marianne

Thanks for your quick reply

First this is will be in VTL mode

and this is will be the main backup destination but copies will be taken from the D2D to another HP Tape Library  for all the backup jobs

there is no replication to DR site as I mentioned in the above line copies will be taken from each backup job the another HP Tape library on a physical tape to be taken offsite

there will be an HP engineer with me assigned for the implementation and configuration of the HP Hardware D2D appliance & HP tape library

Any reason why you prefer VTL over OST.

I believe that VTL was good in the days when NBU (and other backup applications) did not really cater for disk backups, so disk vendors had to find a way to make disk look like tape.

As from NBU 6.5, NBU is perfectly equipped to backup to disk.

You need Enterprise Disk license for VTL as well as OST, so, from NBU point of view, you can use it either way.

If you really want to use VTL, see this White Paper: http://eval.symantec.com/mktginfo/enterprise/white_papers/b-whitepaper_using_virtual_tape_libraries_...

Best to use SLP to duplicate VTL to tape.

See reference to VTL in SLP Best practice guides:
