Re-use of tapes

Sven_W_
Not applicable
We have the following situation in our site:

A fileserver that is backuped daily to disk and then duplicated to tape in a tape robot.

We rotate tapes in a timespan of 4 weeks.... so if you use a tape today you would use the same tape 4 weeks later...

The problem is that we get an error when the duplication to tape has to go to a tape that has been used 4 week earlier. The error is that the system finds no unassigned media.

The retention level for the policy that uses this tape is currently set to infinity... Do I have to set this to 1 month to be able to overwrite this tape 1month later? Or do I have to configure something else?

Check the status of the tape. It may be suspended from the duplication process. If it is, then NetBackup will not write to it. Tape suspension is selectable in the vaulting profile. It is turned on by default. You will find it on the "Eject" tab of the profile GUI.. Select to NOT suspend the tape by removing the checkmark. That will take care of any future problems.
Now to fix your current problem of the tapes that have been suspended change the state of suspension on the tapes via the command:

bpmedia -unsuspend -m

If you do not remove the suspension, then the the tape will not be available for writing purposes until it expires.
Of coarse if the tape is full then it also will not write to it until the data becomes expired sometime after infinity :)Message was edited by:
