SharePoint 2010 Backup Issue

Hi All,

I'm experiencing an error when trying to backup SharePoint 2010.

In the current setup there are two SharePoint application servers and one backend database server. Out of the two application servers, one server acts as the front-end server also and it contains a majority of the apps.

I have added the necessary permissions to the log-on account according to the admin. guide. When creating the policy, i'm unable to browse in to the Sharepoint objects. When the policy is created and run with the directive "Microsoft SharePoint Resources:\" backup fails with the following error.

Appreciate your advice on resolving this issue.

Thanks & Regards,

Yajith

You mentioned: "When creating the policy, i'm unable to browse in to the Sharepoint objects..."

In your frontend client, when launching the BAR GUI, if you don't see the Sharepoint objects, you won't be able to run a successful backup.

The first thing is to get your frontend client to see Sharepoint objects in BAR GUI.. check the admin guide in details, see if you have correct .Net Framework installed, whether the logon account is setup correctly, whether the "Distributed Application Restore Mapping" is setup correctly in master server etc. etc.

Thanks for your responce. I have verified that the .NET 3.5 is installed on the front-end servers and the SQL backend server.

Log-on account has domain adminitrator level access. It is also in the SharePoint Farm admins group and the a sysadmin for the backend SQL server.

For the Distributed Application Restore Mapping i have below.

Front-End Server - SQL Backend Server

Still not able to perform object browsing and the backup selection. Any ideas ?

Ok. Let us travel back in time and verify if pre-requisites are in place

  1. NBU Client and Media /Master Server are at same patch level  (Backward compatibility is supported)
  2. If NBU is on 7.1 and if MOSS 2010 is upgraded with SP1, Update NBU to 7.1.0.3  atleast
  3. It must have the following rights on the servers where the SharePoint components are installed:
  • Local administrative privileges, domain administrative privileges, and site collection administration rights. The account must be a SharePoint farm administrator account.
  • It must have certain local security privileges on the servers which have the content of the SharePoint farm.
  • Internet Information Services (IIS) rights can affect database backups and restores. Ensure that the logon account that is used for backups and restores has rights to access the IIS sites. Integrated Windows Security should be enabled within the IIS rights

Configuring local security privileges for the SharePoint Servers

On each SharePoint server in the farm you must assign certain local security privileges. These privileges are necessary since the NetBackup for SharePoint Agent logs on as the SharePoint user when it accesses data.
To configure the local security privileges
1 Open the Local Security Policy.
2 Click Local Policies.
3 In the User Rights Assignment, add the account to the following policies:

  • Allow log on locally
  • Log on as a service
  • Replace a process level token

4 Run the group policy update command (group policy update) for this change to take effect:
gpupdate /Force
Update above user in Client properties. MAke sure distribution mappings are done (App Server 1 => Back end DB

Finally verify if BEDS and NBWIN, BPBKAR, BPFIS, BPRESOLVER (execute mklogdir.bat it will automate log directory creation) exist under Log Directory on all servers where NBU client is installed.

As you mentioned Policy doesn't let you browse SharePoint resources. Login with your SPAdmin on Front end SharePoint Servers. Open BAR GUI (Run As Administrator) Check if you are able to browse SharePoint Resources.

Let us know if above helps
