Solaris BMR Recovery on a different Hardware

Solaris911

Question in regards to BMR on Solaris 10.

Can Netbackup handle BMR via the master server on another type of machine. For example from V890 to a V490?

If not, what are the limitation since with Windows this is possible. And if the hardware has to be the same, does even the NIC and Fiber have to be same brand? Aren't those drivers installed when you have the boot server first?

Thanks for the help.

BMR master server can hanble BMR backups of any OS, any hardware(if supported, of cource). BMR master server on Windows can handle BMR backups of SPARC Solaris.

If you are talking about dissimilar system restore from V890 to V490, this is not supported - dsissimilar system restore is only supported on Windows clients.

Can you please explains the logic behind this limitation on Sprac boxes?

BMR today does not officially support Dissimilar System Restore on UNIX/LINUX. It is only supported on Windows platform.

DSR means, destination hardware like motherboard system, NIC, disks, HBA etc are upgraded or different than original system. For all these device change, driver configuration and mapping is needed which is only supported on windows today.

On UNIX/Linux, BMR has provided a TECHNOTE so that user can follow the instructions and manually prepare a script which can handle UNIX DSR for their environment.

There are many BMR customers who follow this technote and prepared UNIX DSR in their environment. Even Symantec SE helps here to prepare this customization.

Here is the technote.
