Technical part of NetBackup Front-end Terabyte Licensing Model

Hello everybody!

Short question. How technically does NetBackup Front-end Terabyte Licensing Model work?

For example, company doesn't have backup solution and want to backup a lot of file repositories and/or services and applications and see that buying all agents is more expensive than licensing Front-end Terabyte. Thus company chosing Front-end Terabyte. When the lisence is in the mailbox, what are the next steps (technically): enter licensing code somewhere, copying licensing file somewhere, or else? And the main question: if backup amount exceeds the licensed terabyte amount what happens then? NetBackup alerts administrator and blocks exceeding amount of data from being backed up?

Platform: Windows

When you buy a capacity license you get a NetBackup license key, similar to any other key, which is used when installing a Master or Media Server, you just type (or paste) it into the space on the installation program when it asks for it and that then allows you to install a Master or Media Server.

The same key is used for all Master and Media Servers you install.

This key enables pretty much all features of NetBackup apart from de-duplication.

As with all NetBackup licenses it works on a trust basis so NetBackup will not stop working if you exceed your allowance - this may of course change in future versions.

If you are looking at buying a FE TB license then think about the de-dupe option as well as you will get a much better deal if you buy them at the same time than if you decide you want it later.

If you decide to install the NetBackup OpsCenter component you will find that you also get an Analytics key thrown i with the FE TB license which allows you to do additional reporting in that piece of software.

Hope this helps and answers your questions.

Thank you for quick, detailed and comprehensive response. Appreciate that.

Additional question. If next year additional FE TB will be needed and will be purchased, what will additional license look like? The licensing key will be the same, but will cover more FE TB?

Pretty much but at this stage you dont actually need to add the new key for NetBackup to function - it is just a legal /admin matter not a functional practical one.

Glad to have helped

If you are in the UK then PM me if you need any help with this
