VRTSpbx in NBU7.1 & SF5.x

I need to install the new NBU7.1 client with VRTSpbx1.5.0.6 .  Most of the boxes already have SF5.0 or 5.1, which contain VRTSpbx 1.3.17.0.   What is the recommended method : leave the currrent version installed, or remove old /install newer?  How much does SF depend on VRTSpbx?  Can the pkg be safely changed with SF up and running?

I usually remove older package, and install newer. In this way,no trouble so far on previous version(NB6.5MPx) that force us to remove older PBX which had been installed with SFHA. PBX on SFHA is used in centralized management tools like SF Management Server, not used in core functions.
