Vault Management for Netbackup 7.6

Hi all,

We have migrate out master server version from 7.0.1 to 7.6.0.3 and also there is Netbackup appliance as media server. And prior the migration, all the backup is directly to the tape and every week we perform tape out using the Netbackup Vault Management. But now, since all the backup is going to the disk first and then duplicate to tape ( using  SLP), the vault management seems like not working. No tape out anymore. Is there any way in Netbackup Vault to do the tape out after the duplication in SLP?

Thank you

Hello,

Let me first explain what SLP and Vault features do.

SLPs handle the lifecycle of your backup images via "rules" you create. Your "rules" are applied to backup policies. You define them and they control where backups are stored and for how long (1st copy on Disk for 1 Month, duplicate to 2nd copy on Tape for 1 Year, etc, etc)

Vault can perform the following functions.

  1. Create duplicates of backups that have completed so they can be sent offsite
  2. Create a catalog backup to accompany the duplicates create in  step 1
  3. Eject the media used in step 1 and 2
  4. Send you a report on what has happend in the previous steps.

So you'll notice that both features can create duplicates. If you're using SLP to duplicate you don't need to use Vault to duplicate anymore (step 1 in above explanation). You can however still use Vault to Eject the media and send a report (Steps 3 and 4). You'll have to modify your existing Vault policies and disable the duplication steps. You can decide if you want an SLP to duplicate your catalog backup or whether you want to use Vault to make one.

Hope that helps.
