What is snapshot backup ?

Hi Everybody,

What is snapshot backup, How does netbackup takes snapshots of the backups . Is this the same technique used in Hot Database backups ?

What is the difference between snapshot and flash backup ?

Please help me  I am 3 months old trainee in netbackup 5.1 .

I was just went through your comment above in thread "What is snapshot backup ?" At the end I read about you that you are also a Storage Specialist. Could you please suggest a good book on storage basically in specific to NetApp?

If you want to learn NetApp storage then go to now.netapp.com site. This site is basically encyclopedia of NetApp products, you'll get all information related to Data ONTAP.

Also coming to your query - Difference between Snapshot and Snapmirror. Though this is not the platform for NetApp discussion but still find my comments below.

Snapshot - This is nothing but a point-in-time copy of active file system (AFS) when the snapshot was taken. Many of the organization use this feature as backup and for nearline restorations. But this is not replacement for traditional backup softwares.

Snapmirror - This is replication software which leverages Snapshot technology for incremental block level replication over WAN. Snapmirror is bandwidth as it deduplicates and compresses the blocks prior to sending over the WAN.

Snapshot client in NetBackup integrates with these storages to leverage on their snapshot technologies to have fast backups.

 Twinkle, Snapshot in general is very broad term. Every vendor has its own way of doing Snapshot.
