Windows open files

Macon

I am running NetBackup 5.1 and would like to know if there is an open files option for the Windows client platform.  I have the option for Unix/Linux but don't see it for Windows.  Am I missing something?

Thanks
Macon

Check out the documentation for your servers and clients here:
...and read all you can regarding VSP and VSS.

VSP is by Veritas/Symantec.
VSS is by Microsoft.

Both have their uses and flaws.

VSP can need tweaking on a client by client basis, and there is no "golden" config that suits all.

VSP's biggest problem is that, out of the box (i.e. default mode), it can consume 30GB of disk on any given local volume on a Windows client.  The question you have to ask is - do I always have 30GB spare on C across all systems?

Most sites don't.

Hence, my default settings are:

VSP exclude:            C
VSP size method:    GB  (i.e. not percentage based)
VSP initial                 500 MB
VSP maximum:        2000 MB   (but some clients need 3000, and a very few need 5000 )
VSP busy wait          5 seconds (leave this - do not change it)
VSP busy timeout    30 seconds (reduce from 30 secs)
...these are all client attributes.

There are more settings in the "Client Attributes" tab of the "Master Server Properties" - most notably, setting VSP to "continue on error" and not "fail on error".  The default is to "fail on error".

N.B. if you exclude C from VSP, this means two things at the same time - do not use C as a host volume for a VSP cache file, and do not use VSP to try to take an open file backup of the C volume.

I exclude C because I don't want system drives being thrashed with a large amount of writes and reads for other active volumes.

However, excluding C from VSP means you may get more files reported as open/locked.  Thus, I also apply a standard list of folder and/or file exclusions to all Windows clients.  I have researched into each of these, and they are all safe to exclude at my site - you may want to review these exclusions for your site.

My "exclusion list" notes as follows:

Thanks Bob.  I've got a long long long way to go to get to your level :)

Corrections to my post in bold red:

Hence, my default settings are:
VSP exclude:            C
VSP size method:    MB  (i.e. not percentage based)
VSP initial                 500 MB
VSP maximum:        2000 MB   (but some clients need 3000, and a very few need 5000 )
VSP busy wait          5 seconds (leave this - do not change it)
VSP busy timeout    30 seconds (reduce from 300 secs)
...these are all client attributes.

...and I'll post a quick comment about VSS...

VSS is available by default in WinXP and above.  Just type in "vssadmin" in a cmd box to see a list of some of the basic list options.  I can't offer more than this, as I haven't researched it in any detail.  I have used the "list shadows" option during backups and you can see different things going on during backups when VSS is used.

Maybe someone more knowledgable can enlighten us newbies...
