how to update_clients when you do not have updated binaries on master server

How do you load new client patches on your master server  in order to push them out if they weren't updated during upgrade. is there an automatic way to do this on the master?  Unix master server and unix clients.... i want to update some servers to 6.5.5 but it appears we do not have the 6.5.5 update binaries on master to push.

Well, we're all over the place here.

First of all, this is NOT the pack you want to install - this is a SERVER pack for 6.5.3, and you previously said you're only interested in getting clients updated.

The pack you need will have "CLT" in its name.  For instace, the 6.5.5 pack - I'm still going on the assumption you need 6.5.5 even though we're now talking about 6.5.3 - is THIS pack:

Release Update NB_CLT_6.5.5.tar provides fixes for the Veritas NetBackup (tm) Enterprise Server / Server 6.5 on UNIX clients. NetBackup UNIX Add-on products and Database Agents have separate Release Updates.
 http://support.veritas.com/docs/337786

Again, please note that applying (or in your case, re-applying) this release update on your master will ONLY update the clients that are already installed on the master.  So if you don't have a Linux client on there now, you won't have a LInux client on there after you apply 6.5.5.

In order to GET the Linux client on your master, you have to go back to your 6.5 media kit, find the relevant clients disc and install the client from there.  Then, you can update it to 6.5.5 using the release update above.

Forgive me for saying so, but you seem to be making this relatively simple exercise needlessly complex.  I hope I've managed to lay out what you need to do and this makes sense - if not, please ask again - we'll get it eventually.  :)

You have to install the base 6.5 clients from the relevant CD/DVD onto your master, then REapply the 6.5.5 "CLT" release update on your master to bring those newly-installed clients up to 6.5.5.  (You might need to run the installer with a special command line switch if it complains that "this release update is already installed" or words to that effect.  It should tell you how to do that in the same message.  If it doesn't, come back here and someone will already have dug it up and posted it here.  [Hopefully!])

I was thinking i could copy the client directories from the NB_CLT_6.5.5_337786.tar file which actually is  /usr/openv/netbackup/client/###  If i did that would I be able to push them out...? It appears to me that all the files/subdirectories are there.....  all of these compressed files have the underlying substructure for the /usr/openv/netbackup/client/### if i just uncompressed them and copied them over i was wondering if that might work?

Those are in the upper directory not in the underylying .Z files.   Those are used when updating clients etc. by running the update script.

You are creating uneccessary hard work and potential headaces. You have asked for advice and received VERY GOOD advice from Chris Zimmerman that most of us agree with.

Install the client binaries from 6.5 media, re-apply patch (with -p option if I remember correctly), and run update_clients.

some are at 6.5.5 and some are not, on the master server.   So  you are sayiing to find a base 6.5 GA client load it on master server  then run the nb_update from the unix client tar balll then update_clients ?  This will update all operating system clients to the 6.5.5 release?  i believe the base was 6.0 then upgraded from there.

Marianne

Correct. Even if clients are on 6.0 (or less), update_clients will upgrade the clients to 6.5.5.

After installing base 6.5 client software followed by 6.5.5, ensure that Client O/S is specified correctly in policies before running update_clients.

Read up in NBU Install Guide under this topic:

Installing client type software on a master server

Make sure that you install the software for all of the UNIX client types you intend to back up onto the server. Otherwise, you cannot add these client types to the NetBackup policy configuration.

Chris,
i have loaded the 6.5 ga clients just like you said and it all worked great.  I do have the NB_CLT_6.5.3.tar file  which is from the logs that im posting not server. i.e.  It installs the updates for linux sgi intel etc I used the -p option when running NB_update.install... But it is not updating the HP9000 clients  and yes 6.5.3 is what im testing now...

Are you SURE you installed the HP-UX 6.5 client?  It looks like MAYBE there was a Java installation, but apparently that isn't enough, since the install script didn't detect anything to update underneath HP9000-800/HP-UX...

I dunno, I may still be missing some key information.  You may want to open up a support case if you still can't get it to work.

(Tangent: The reason 11.23 isn't in the list is because it should be a symlink to 11.11; they use the same client...which is why, when you `cat version` in HP9000-800/HP-UX11.23, it says "11.11")

I don't have a DVD handy but I do have the "UNIX Clients 1" CD image which includes the HP-UX clients.  It has more files in that same subdirectory:

I have no idea why your DVD wouldn't have all the files you need.  Did you get it from us, or was it burned from an image?  "65_dvd1_20070723" is unfamiliar to me.

Are you able to hop onto FileConnect and download a new NB_65_CLIENTS1 disc image?
