windows open file backup

hi all,

I need an advise on windows open file backup; here's my scenario

I did not enable windows open file backup in Master server properties (client attributes); neither had i started VSS services in windows for all 3 servers (master, media and client)

so I proceed the normal process, create a DSU and policy; before i start the backup, I created a file called 1.txt and type "before 1st backup" and save the file. then I reopen the file and continue typing the sentence "this is for windows open file backup" but did not save it as I just leave it opened on the desktop

and I started the backup, to my surprise the backup goes successfully and it backed up the text "before 1st backup". attached below is the process log

6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - requesting resource dsu
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - requesting resource master.NBU_CLIENT.MAXJOBS.sql
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - requesting resource master.NBU_POLICY.MAXJOBS.ss
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - granted resource master.NBU_CLIENT.MAXJOBS.sql
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - granted resource master.NBU_POLICY.MAXJOBS.ss
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - granted resource MediaID=@aaaab;Path=C:\yl-destination;MediaServer=media
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - granted resource dsu
6/16/2013 6:01:09 PM - started
6/16/2013 6:01:10 PM - estimated 0 Kbytes needed
6/16/2013 6:01:11 PM - started process bpbrm (1180)
6/16/2013 6:01:18 PM - connecting
6/16/2013 6:01:22 PM - connected; connect time: 00:00:04
6/16/2013 6:01:34 PM - begin writing
6/16/2013 6:02:17 PM - end writing; write time: 00:00:43
the requested operation was successfully completed(0)

I remember on my previous attempt, I notice the backup done with partially successfully, in this case, it did not

I am running netbackup 7.0 on all my servers

to confirm vss is not enabled, here's my vss status in client

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>vssadmin list shadows
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool

Why would you disable backup of open file at all ?

I think you overlooked one important piece of information. You do not know how the text edit work. Upon editing it could just read the file without putting a lock on the file. Only when writing the changed text file it would open the text file.

That mean you need to hit the millisecond where the backup run and you have the file to have Netbackup skipping the file.

wordpad, notepad or Word properly work different.

WOFB is enabled by default.

You add client name in Master server Host Properties -> Client Attributes to customise or disable WOFB.
