Well I live in hope that someone may read and respond to this post 
I've tried a test upgrade from 5.3 to 5.5 using the method suggested in the documentation which is to install 5.5 and let it detect the previous version. This has hung twice leaving me with a mixed unreliable setup which I had kind of expected from previous experience. I therefore now have no confidence in following the upgrade process in my 'live' environment.
The way to go which I would be confident with is to completely remove 5.3 and then install 5.5. I want to keep my quota and configuration information. So the question is will the *.dat and *.mdb files work OK if I just move them over or is there another way of exporting and re-importing the information.
In the documentation it suggests that the data is exported and the imported as part of the upgrade process which makes me think the data structures may be different?
Otherwise I'm left with having to manually re-create all my policies
