Domain Controller trashed upon restore

We performed a standard restore this past weekend to increase disk space on the C partition of a server we inherited.  We deleted the partition table, resized the partition, and everything "seemed" to come up fine.  We begain seeing odd errors on the network and in evaluating the Event Viewer, realized that the DC was stuck in USN Rollback Mode.  This ended up being a huge pain as we had to demote, and re-promote this machine in AD.

Are there steps to prevent this from happening?  I would feel this is a pretty BIG issue that imaging/restoring a DC...doesn't work.
