Windows 2008, HyperV, VMM 2008 Beta

Hi,

Is there currently support for backing up virtual machines running on HyperV in Windows 2008 and does it handle quiescence within the virtual machines? One of the VMs will be running MySQL and I can't find any information about a VSS writer, therefore I might need to shutdown the VM and start it again after the snapshot... does anyone have experience of MySQL backups?

If HyperV support is coming in 8.5, I'd be grateful if I could obtain a beta version as this is an urgent requirement.

Thanks

You may want to checkout the beta testing site https://symbeta.symantec.com to learn about our next release. Current versions does not support HyperV virtual systems.

Thanks David,

I've signed up. There are no projects listed, do I need to be given access to the BESR betas?

I would very much like a copy of the 8.5 Beta too. We have the requirement of imaging Exchange 2007 Servers (64-bit) to Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V. Currently the version 8 does not allow this. I presume it (Microsoft Viertual Server does not support 64-bit guest) is a hard-coded error message as VHD files can run on 64-bit as per Hyper-V. Is there any patch that can remove this limitation?

In the meantime, if the image is converted to VMware does anyone know of a free tool to convert back to VHD?

Thanks.

See BESR 8.5 V2V in the documentation.

I did actually manage to complete my Exchange 2007 (64-bit) to Hyper-V conversion before 8.5 was released. I initially converted to VMDK (VMware format) which does work in v 8.0. Then I used "VMDK(VMWare) to VHD Converter" from vmToolkit http://vmtoolkit.com/ which is a free download with registration. It worked fine but the extra step meant that it took much longer than expected with my 100Gb plus image file.

Did 8.5 now available for trialware here: http://www.symantec.com/business/products/family.jsp?familyid=backupexec work for you in converting your images to *.VHD directly that can be imported into Hyper-V?
