Is there a way to automate erasing a tape and labeling it before the backup job starts?

For a while now the backup's have been going good, then all of a sudden, the media set is remarking the tapes as not appendable. I've gone through and checked the media set properties and it's set to allow append every 2 days... For some reason tho...
