I take it by optimized job you mean a duplicate backup jobs template? The problem with this is, if the MMS goes down, then the database will also be lost. would a backup of the MMS system state and SQL Database be required?

I am looking at doing a similar thing to this, I was wondering what happens though if the MMS dies? The jobs will be logged in the SQL DB on the MMS and restores will not be possible? Is this correct. Would a centralised SQL DB help with this?

I've found in the past that it's not just the network that slows down a backup, but the type of data and the agents used. What OS is on the remote server, and what Agent's you using to back it up?
