Hi,

If you have a job sat in 'Canceling' state which never clears, the best way to clear this is to attempt to stop the Backup Exec services via the Services Manager mmc. This should only be done if there are no other backups or restore jobs running, as stopping the services will effect any running jobs as well.

When there are no other jobs actually running, attempt to stop all the Backup Exec services. The canceling job may prevent the services from shutting down cleanly and if that happens, open the Windows Task Manager. From the Process tab, please find the Bengine.exe and Beremote.exe processes and 'End Process' these. Once they are stopped, please attempt to stop and restart all the other Backup Exec services, in the Service Manager mmc. The most important service to restart is the Backup Exec Device & Media Service, as a hold will be left on the backup device if that is not restarted.
Once all services have been restarted, go back in to Backup Exec and the job will have canceled fully.

As mentioned, stopping and starting services with no other jobs running is the way to go. When you have lots of jobs running and pending, and a job stuck on canceling, this is not fun.

What I want to know is... Why is this such a common problem? I'm guessing a full half of all jobs I cancel get stuck on canceling. Virtually all those that get hung happen with lots of jobs going.

Why are you cancelling so many jobs?  Maybe that will give a clue as to why you are frustrated.  If the job appears to be hung due to a lack or response or loss of communication with the data source or target device, then cancelling may also be a victim of that connectivity issue.
