The following message appears when trying to backup a specific user's mailbox:

The post doesn't show it, but the symbols above actually appear as Asian type of characters in the log.

Another odd thing is that these messages do not appear every night. They show up every so often for the same user.

How do I go about finding out what's causing this?

Hello,

Do you get any error message code and does the job fail or does it complete with exceptions? What is the version of Exchange that you are backing up? Yo have mentioned that the message appears every time for the same user. does it also appear for any other user too? Have you tried a backup excluding that user, if so, what is the result obtained?

Do elaborate on the above. You can also install Service pack 2 for 9.1 in case you do not have it from the following link:
