Can someone confirm the state of play re Hyper-V agents.
We have 2 Hyper-V hosts, each running the Hyper-V agent. We then have multiple virtual machines running on each host, with the guest operating system (i.e. the C: drive) running off VHD files. Each virtual machine then has ‘data’ drives (i.e. D:\) for storage of actual data relevant to that server. So for example our web server looks like this;
C: drive = Windows operating system
D: drive = Web pages files (inetpub directory)
And our file server looks like this;
C: drive = Windows operating system
D: drive = User home directories, public folders, user roaming profiles
The actual ‘data’ drives are not running off VHD files, they are pass-through disks exposed directly through the Hyper-V hosts as individual LUNs connected to our SAN.
I would assume the Hyper-V agent is only able to backup the physical VHD files seen by the Hyper-V host servers, and if we wanted to backup the data drives in each guest, we would need to license a Windows remote agent installed ‘inside’ the guest to expose those drives to Backup Exec. So take our web server for example - we would need the Hyper-V agent to backup it's VHD file, plus the Windows remote agent to backup the data drive.
Or does the Hyper-V agent (which covers an unlimited number of virtual machines) include an unlimited number of Windows remote agents, much like the Exchange/SQL agents include Windows remote agents for the server they are used on?
