An attempt to write database end of media has failed.

I have configured Backup Exec 10d with a policy that backs up targets to disk, and then duplicates to tape. The backup to disk runs without any errors, the duplicate job run, but fails when the 1st tape is full with the following error.

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe00084f2 - An attempt to write database end of media has failed.
Final error category: Backup Media Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-34034

I would like to know what is causing this error?

FYI I have already referred to the link above and completed the following.
1. Replace media with a brand new tape. Same result
2. Ran 4 consecutive cleans. Same result
3. Did not retension media, but have tried 10 different media cartridges. Same result
4. Tape drive alignment. Tape drive works correctly with other backup software, and passes all manufacture diagnostics. Same result
5. Tried Veritas, and OEM drivers, also updated firmware. Same result
6. SCSI Configuration has been verifed. Tape drive works correctly with other backup software. Same result
7. Termination and cables are verified. Tape drive works correctly with other backup software. Same result
8. Long erased tape in drive. Same result
9. Have not changed registry setting as it adversely affects data througput to tape. Unacceptable performance
10. Have not changed registry setting as it adversely affects data throughput to tape. Unacceptable performance

Any ideas?

Application Log reports...

Storage device "IBM 1" reported an error on a request to write a file mark to media.

Error reported:
Physical end of tape encountered.
.

For more information, click the following link:
http://eventlookup.veritas.com/eventlookup/EventLookup.jhtml

Clicking on the link refers to http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/253616.htm
which recommends cleaning the tape drive or replacing media which has all been done as per above. There does not appear to be any drive or media problem as full diagnostics indicate the drive is working correctly.

The backups still fail with the same message when using BE 10d

I am resurrecting this old thread as my problem has never been resolved.

The MS KB article did not provide any useful information (9 or 11 errors are not occuring)

I have since obtained a warranty replacement of the tape drive with the same result.

So basically a summary...

1. It is not the tape drive.
2. It is not the drivers.
3. It is not the firmware.
4. It is not the controller/cables/termination.
5. It is not the media.
6. It is not a problem with BE9.1

7. It IS a problem with BE10d. (all Veritas updates applied)

I look forward to a response.

HI,

Have you tried a backup to Backup to Disk folder.

Try repairing the Backup Exec database

How to run a Backup Exec database repair when the original Backup Exec database is found to be inconsistent
