BACKUP EXEC 12.5 & GRT OF EXCHANGE 2007

Hi,

We have a customer running Backup Exec 12.5, all upto date with patches/hotfixes, and we are trying to backup Exchange 2007 via GRT, however it is failing. The backup backs up the database fine but when GRT is turned on it fails.

The backup is drive is USB3 which is formatted to NTFS and is 3TB in size.

Any Help would be good.

Hi,

Have you tried to create a new selection list and job and then run the backup against this?

Might also be worth your while to download Symantec's b2dtest.exe, and run this against the external drive to verify that it is supported.

Thanks!

Check this technote:

Probably a blocksize mismatch.

...not only is the error message completely incorrect, but the products are too. The OP is using Exchange 2007 (with 1 error message), and you've posted a TN with AD (with a different error message)...

Thanks!

I am trying to find the correct technote, although your one is pretty close

a 3TB USB disk (in fact any USB disk bigger than 2TB) is often supplied by the hardware vendor with a 4K sector size. However your Exchnage 2007 information store is almost certainly currently held on a 512byte sector size volume.

We cannot support this mismatch of sectors sizes for GRT operations as we have to be able to mount the image (IMG folder) of the Exchange database from the disk target (or tape staging area) and we can't do that if there has been a sector size change.

BTW Microsoft do not officially support the 4K sector size on disks prior to Windows 2012 (even though it appears to work for basic operations)

Solution for this issue is to reformat the USB disk with a 512byte emulation for which you will need the correct software tools from the hardware vendor (often supplied with the drive itsef) to perform.

If I find the correct technote I will update this post

EDIT: Found the correct technote (note the exact error message will vary from BE version to BE version and it is the dame issue as mentioned in a different technote for AD mentioend by Kunal already)

Hi,

Please check if SP 3 is installed for Exchange 2007, as BE 12.5 does not support Exchange 2007 SP3.

Please check the SCL:
