BE 12.0 and NAS

We currently have Backup Exec 12.0. We are thinking of adding a NAS device for data storage. Will BE 12.0 backup the data which sits on the NAS device? If so, does it require any special BE agents?  Thanks.

BE12.0 supports NAS, remote agent is not required.

You need to add the BE service account on the NAS box.

Refer to http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH14963

Even though you do not need to install any remote agent on the NAS to back it up, you still need to purchase a remote agent licence to comply with the licencing terms.

I think this should be the case when planning using NDMP.

What about when backing up from the media server where NAS is a mounted as a CIFS share?

As long as you are backing something from a server/device that is not the media server, you need a remote agent licence.  For example, you are backing a shared directory on another Windows server.  Although you did not install the remote agent on this server, you still need to buy a remote agent licence to comply with the licencing terms.
