Backing up Exchange server always give VSS error

I have a fresh BE 10d install, and a fresh install Exchange 2003 on Win2k3 (seperate box). All software has latest service packs installed.

When backing up the public folders, I get this error on the exchange server:

Backup- \\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Exchange Public Folders AOFO: Initialization failure on: "\\EXCHANGE\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group". Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS).
Snapshot provider error (0xE000FED1): A failure occurred querying the Writer status.
Check the Windows Event Viewer for details.
Writer Name: Exchange Server, Writer ID: {76FE1AC4-15F7-4BCD-987E-8E1ACB462FB7}, Last error: The VSS Writer timed out (0x800423f2), State: Failed during freeze operation (9). Consult your Microsoft documentation for details. Check the Windows Event Viewer for corresponding application or system errors.

Prior to running the backup, the VSS on the exchange server shows the following:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
Writer Instance Id: {0e78fde4-115e-4b65-8ab0-8b8a0c081501}
State: Stable
Last error: No error

After the backup fails, the exchange server VSS shows this:

Writer name: 'Microsoft Exchange Writer'
Writer Id: {76fe1ac4-15f7-4bcd-987e-8e1acb462fb7}
Writer Instance Id: {0e78fde4-115e-4b65-8ab0-8b8a0c081501}
State: Failed
Last error: Retryable error

and the Exchange server's event log shows
Source: ESE
ID: 2007
Message: Information Store (2232) Shadow copy instance 1 aborted.

Can anyone give me ideas?
Thanks,
MD

Hi,

Are you using Advanced Open File Option?

If yes, try deactivating the option and just select the Exchange resources from the Exchange icon.
