Backing up newer Guest OS from older Server OS

Hi,

Can anyone clarify if it is supported to backup a Windows Server 2016 (Hyper-V Guest OS) from Backup Exec Server 15 running on Windows Server 2012R2 ?

  • BE Server 15 running on WS 2012R2
  • Hyper-V Host (WS 2012R2)
  • Hyper-V Guest (WS 2016)

Thanks,

PH

The first part is Windows 2016 isn't supported on BE 15.  This means we can't install a remote agent on the guest machine.

You should still be able to perform backups of the VM, you just won't be able to perform any GRT operations.

Guest OS support is depending on what the Host OS supports, so if the Hyper-V server supports that as a guest then we can back it up.  Without a remote agent on the machine, you will lose some functionality though, mainly GRT.

I would suggest upgrading to at least BE 16 as it supports Windows 2016.
