Backing up to USB Drives in 2010

I am attempting to use Seagate GO 880gb usb drives for backup vs tapes.  I set it up as a removeable drive and I am only getting 40-50 mb/min.  I will never get the nightly backup completed at this speed.

It is USB 2.0.  Was not aware that 3.0 had been released yet.

The theoretical maximum data rate in USB 2.0 is 480 Mbit/s (60 MB/s) per controller,  so you are right in the ball park

(USB 3.0 was released in january of this year, and the specification considers it reasonable to achieve 3.2 Gbit/s (0.4 GByte/s or 400 MByte/s),
