Backing up virtual servers to tape drive

I have a customer with a question:

He is creating a solution with some IBM servers a QNAP and a tape backup.

He virtualizing the IBM server, and using the QNAP as a NAS. He is going to be using the VMware replication software to replicate to a dedicated LUN ( or something like that ) , then he whants to take that backup and put into tape backups in a tape library.

Doing about 6-10 TB of storage on this solution. He cant seem to figure out how he will get the Qnap backup  into the tape backup.

Can he implement Backup Exec (Core or V-Ray) without the need of adding an additional server?

Hi,

Best thing to do is use a physical server as a media server. You're basically unsupported if you have a media server as a VM.

If the LUN is presented to the media server, with VMware replication going to that LUN, it's very likely that the LUN will pull through to the media server as unsignatured...you MIGHT be able to backup the VMs this way using the AVVI agent and full BE. V-Ray would also work.

The V-Ray edition will only make sense if your VM's have a lot of applications and databases, like Exchange or SQL databases, which requires the Agent for Applications and Databases licences to back them up.  You got to weigh the cost of a V-Ray edition licence against buying individual licences.
