Backup Exec 12.5 - Backup Tapes Offline?

I need to understand why when I put a tape in our Tanberg LTO-4 and previously Tanberg LTO-2 it doesn't show it online in the Media Location - Online? We are using Backup Exec 12.5 and have 1,000's of tapes. If I ever had to go back and do a restore how would I know what tape is in the drive other than what was written on it?  However, I did find a work around, if I restart the Backup Exec services it then shows the tape online.  But there has to be a easier way?  What am I missing?

When you change the tape the you can try to run an Inventory job on the slot where you have inserted the tape or on the tape drive in case of standalone tape drive.
