Backup Exec 2010 R3: Restoring Exchange from scratch

Good morning, Symantec.

I have an Exchange server that is completely crashed and needs to be reinstalled on new hardware (same make/model server). To my knowledge, the best practice here is to do the following. Please reply with corrections if you disagree. This server is running Windows Server 2003 - Exchange Server 2003

1. Configure RAID, install Windows Server 2003 & patch Windows Updates
2. Install the remote agent on new server
3. Restore C:
4. Restore System State
5. Restore D: & E:
6. Restore Microsoft Information Store

If I do all of the above, does that save me the time and trouble of running forest prep and installing Exchange via disc? If not, any tips and best practices here are very welcome.

Reboot server between step 4 and 6 (will work even if you dont restore D: & E:, but need to create partitions)

Great! So, this BEX 2010 Exchange restores are such that I will not have to install Exchange and then restore over top of it?

Do you still have Active Directory up and running ?

Yes, I have two DC's running AD 2003. My question is, do I need to install Exchange and overwrite the default database or restore without Exchange installed.

No need to re-install Exchange, if you have a good backup of Exchange server with information store.

-Rebuild server

-Restore C, system state and shadow copy componenets together

-reboot and restore information store.
