Does Backup express know the difference between a sql and sql express database?
Can I backup a sql express 2008 database using GRT?
Does it matter if the sql express database is running on a vm hosted by microsoft hyper-v?

SQL express 2008 appears in the compatibility list of BE2012, so with an Agent for SQL you will
be able to backup and restore irrespective of SQL express being on Physical or Virtual machine.
For GRT of SQL I would suggest you to read the below forum thread.

So Backup Exec does not know or care what version of sql its backing up, full sql or sql express?
What is the point of the GRT if its only applicable to restoring the instance of sql?
Before going virtual we relied on restoring the whole sql express database from the single file that application vendor created automatically on a nightly basis. Should we just stick to that?
