Backup Exec 2012 v 14.0 - Maintanence licence file (.slf) is not compatible with the software

I purchased Backup Exec maintanence licence for 1 year and downloaded the .slf file from the veritas portal. But it seems like the file is not compatible with the software. I am not able to register the serial number with the software. Even after adding the licence file/serial number, the software still shows the " license expired message ". I suppose this is a bug occured when the ownership shifted from Symantec to Veritas. I tried to get help from chat support, but in vain. Please post if anyone else had similar experiance.

Actually we do have aproblem with maintenance licenses and BE 2012 that we are currently looking into, however have not yet decided what to do about the issue.

 

Basically the newer license keys should contain both maintenance and product keys (which should be visible in the metatags within the .SLF file if you open the file inside notepad)

BE 2012 was written before this combined license exists so does not handle it very well and customers that renew their 2012 maintenance won't be able to see the updated expiry details.

Note: if you have maintenance you shoud be eligible for license upgrades to newer BE versions so other than checking the SCL and HCL carefully (against older hardware and software technologies that we may no longer support) you should be able to upgrade to get rid of this problem (if you don't know how to get upgrade licenses against maintenance again speak to customer care)

 

 

FYI if a BE 2014 customer sees the same thing we need support cases opening as we are not currently aware that BE 2014 is affected.

BE 15 is NOT affected by the same issue and customers with BE 15 should speak to customer care. - We are aware of one BE 15 customer that saw a similar symptom but when their license was opened in Notepad it only contained a product license with no maintenance details and as such the license itself needed correcting which tech support cannot do.

I'd recommend getting hold of them directly instead and not via chat. Call them and request a new license key.

The new maintenance licence is probably for the latest version of BE which is BE 15.  You don't have to install the maintenance licence.  Installing the maintenance licence will only alert you when the maintanence period is coming to an end.  If you have to install the maintanence licence, then call your local Veritas support number and then select option 2 to get the licencing department and get them to give you the maintenance licence for BE 2012.

BE 2012 is quite old.  You should upgrade to BE 15 which fixes a lot of problems.
