Backup Exec Won't Work Anymore?

I have been having trouble with the backups for over a week now on our Windows 2003 R2 server running Backup Exec 10d SP4.

I keep getting errors in the event log shown below, the device keeps going offline and trhe tape won't eject properly... i have to power down the server and then hold down the manual eject button to get the tape out upon power up?

Anyone have any idea what this might be... is it hardware that needs replacing (Device is a Sony SDX-900V)?

Many thanks,

Martyn

Does this happen to all of the tapes or is it just 1 of them?

Hi,

Sounds like a hardware issue. If Sony have a diagnostic utility, I'd recommend getting hold of it and running checks against the hardware to see if there are problems. If there are, replace the hardware.

You can also check in Event Viewer and see if there are any hardware-related errors, as well as Alerts in BE itself.

You can also check and see if there are any errors with the SCSI card, and that the SCSI cable is connected securely with no cable problems...

Thanks!

Hello,

Thanks for responding to my problem.

Yeah it happens to all tapes and only started a week ago?

I will try and find a Sony diagnostic utility and see what that brings up.

thanks

Martyn.

The go with what Craig said.

I had this a couple of months ago. Once was because the drive was so dirty and after a clean it was fine. The other time is was the hardware and was replaced by HP.

Hope this helps

I have downloaded and run the Sony Tape Product Diagnostic Utility.

The bus scan doesn't find a Sony tape drive? Do you think this is the drive itself that could be faulty, or could is be the SCSI card?

Many thanks

Have you stopped backup exec services before running the utility?

If not, stop the BE services and run the utility.

Also as you are using windows 2003, make sure that RSM service is stopped and disabled.

...what you'd need to do is the following:

1. Turn off the tape drive and then turn it on again, and verify it shows up in Windows Device Manager.

2. Stop the BE services.

3. Run the utility again and check for any errors.

4. If none, start the BE services up again and rerun a backup.

If the check fails, then you have a hardware failure...I'd suggest looking at replacing the hardware with a compatible unit that you can verfiy by checking your version's Software Compatibility List...

Thanks!
