We recently purchased Symantec Backup Exec for loading content onto LTO-5 tapes in a HP LTO-5 Model 3000 external tape drive. Since I use Backup Exec, will the archived content on tape created from the HP LTO-5 tape drive be readable by a Quantum LTO-5 tape drive, and will a tape created on a Quantum LTO-5 tape drive using Backup Exec Basic be readable by our HP LTO-5 tape drive when we use Backup Exec. Trying to understand if there is inter-exchangeability between the two manufacturers when using Symantec's Backup Exec. Thank you..

You should have no trouble at all with compatibility between different mfg versions of the same technology- ie LTO5 to LTO5
If you had different technologies, LTO3 & LTO5 for example, then the compatibility is defined by the definitions of each type ie you can read LTO3 media on an LTO5 drive, but not write, and cannot read LTO5 media on LTO3

Remember the tape format is just the medium. The application determines the actual data format written. BackupExec can read other backupExec tapes regardless of tape format. BackupExec cannot read NetBackup tapes even though they are both written to LTOx technology.
