Backup Utility Driver Error with Veritas 9.1

Jen_Hall

I am running SBS 2003 Premium with Veritas 9.1. Both indicate that I am up to date with all my patches and updates but I am still getting a "Backup Utility Driver" error message whenever I log onto the server. My backups run fine but how do I correct this?

I'm not sure if this issue would cause the message you're seeing, but you may want to take a look at this technote:

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/264969.htm

It involves copying the driver file to another location.

Thank you for the response. Before I go editing the registry, I'd really like to know what might be causing this error. I"ll look to see if those files that you referred to are present or missing.

Here is some more information, as I said, I'm running SBS 2003 Premium with Veritas Backup Exec for Servers 9.1. I could be mistaken but I thought that these two were supposed to work well together. As it is though the back-up component in SBS doesn't even seem to recognize that Veritas or my tape backup is installed. Whenever I try to run the backup Config wizard, it fails to recognize the tape drive.

Any additional help troubleshooting is greatly appreciated.

Hi.

I see that the article is a little misleading in that it tells you to use caution when editing the registry, but this article doesn't actually suggest editing it at all... simply copying the driver file to the location specified in the registry...

hope this helps :)

BTW, what's the exact error you're seeing when you log in?

"Devices or applications disabled.

"Backup Utility Driver" will cause Windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented these drivers from loading. Click here for more details. "

When one clicks on the display window a new message is displayed:

"Issue Description:

This version of Backup Utility Driver relies on drivers that might not be compatible with this version of Windows. Updated drivers are available from http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/242074.htm . Contact Backup Software Vendors for more details.

BTW, that file is already in place for the path listed in the registry.

Hello,

We are not aware whether you have installed VERITAS device drivers or OEM drivers for the storage device. Hence we suggest you to go through the troubleshooting steps provided in the following document.

http://support.veritas.com/docs/255501

1. Please check whether the hardware is compatible with Backup Exec 9.1.

http://support.veritas.com/dsl/verselect_ddProduct_BEWNT_prod1_NT9.htm

If yes,

Install the latest VERITAS device drivers.

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only) http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/273853.htm

If no,

Install the latest OEM drivers. Also, see if any firmware updates are available.

NOTE : If we do not receive your intimation within two business days, this post would be marked assumed answered and would be moved to the answered threads pool.

Thank you.

1) IBM ULTRIUM-TD2 tape drive that has been tested by Veritas.

2) Tape drivers provided by Veritas, 9/2/2003, version 5.0.

According to the link that you provided for the VERITAS device drivers, this device is not specifically included in the latest update. What are the known conflicts if any with installing on Windows SBS 2003 and what is the final version number for this driver after install. (i.e. 5.1, 6.0, other?)

Again, my backups are working just fine. My only issue is with the error message that appears each time I log onto the server.

Hi,
Since the error refers to a driver, and you state you are using the Veritas driver, try running tapeinst.exe and having it remove the Veritas driver.
You should have no problem rebooting and installing the OEM driver for the tape unit, then using it with Veritas.

The Veritas drivers are also likely your problem with ntbackup not seeing the drive.

Hello,

Could you use the tapeinst utility to uninstall and reinstall Veritas tape drivers. Please reboot after these steps.

HI folks. I tried running the tapeinst.exe as instructed. NO change in the error message.
I ran it a number of different times.
- first time, Selected "Use VERITAS tape drivers for all tape devices."
- Second time, Selected "Use VERITAS tape drivers for all tape devices." AND selected "Delete entries for tape devices that are not available."
- Third time, "Use VERITAS tape drivers for tape devices that do not already have drivers loaded."

Please advise.

Hi Jen,

Please remove the Veritas drivers altogether, run tapeinst, and have it use the OEM drivers (which you will need to install after your reboot.
