Backup times are way too long

Hey all. I'll start off with my backup configuration. I'm running Backup Exec 9.1 Rev 4691 on a Win 2003 server with a Compaq 64 bit/66MHz Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter Driver Version 5.2.3790.0 connected to an ADIC FastStor 2 tape drive, driver unknown.

The local backup works just fine. My problem is when I'm backing up my volumes on my Apple Xserve and Xserve RAID. This is what is taking almost an entire day to backup. The Xserve is running OS X 10.3.5.

The properties of my differential backups which occur 4 times a week under Settings>Advanced are Backup Method>Differential - Changed Files, Compression Type>Hardware if available otherwise software.

I am using the mac agent and it sees the folders to back up just fine. I just can't figure out why this takes so long. It is backing up almost 1TB of information alone on the Xserve RAID which is obviously a lot of data but I feel that it shouldn't be backing up everything every night.

The same tape set stays in the drive for the 4 differential backups each week. I thought that as per my settings only the files that have changed within my backup set would be backed up. Turns out that Full backups are being performed every day.

So, should I create new backup targets further down the folder hierarchy so the system is more specific as to what gets backed up or are my settings all wrong? Right now, I'm targeting the top level of a folder with multiple subdirectories.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Erik

Hi,

Please refer these technotes:

Backup throughput for Oracle agent, UNIX agent, Macintosh agent, or Windows 95/98 Agent, is very slow while backups with any other agent run at normal speed.

When attempting to run a Differential or Incremental backup of a Macintosh (MAC) workstation through the Backup Exec Macintosh Agent, a Normal (Full) backup is performed instead.
