BackupExec 12.5 Hardware Encryption AND Hardware Compression with LTO4

Afterburned
Level 3

When I set my backups up a year aog I never tested if they were compressing, just the fact that they were working with software encryption!
Now I need to compress as well so have changed to hardware encryption and hardware compression - throughput rates are not affected, and according to the docs I have seen all LTO4 drives should have the ability to do this (mine certainly does), basically BE passes the encryption key to the drive which holds it in memory, then compresses and encrypts as it writes.  Neat!

Of course there are issues... the verify now does not report the correct set name!  I can live with this, but after a few good backups the verify now also takes far too long - the backup is timing out!

Has anyone else out there used this configuration?
Can anyone suggest if this is a good or bad config?

Thanks in advance!

Frist some explanation on  Hardware Encryption AND Hardware Compression

http://support.veritas.com/docs/309478

Backup Exec provides you with the ability to encrypt data.
When you encrypt data, you protect it from unauthorized access.Anyone that tries to access the data has to have an encryption key that you create.
Backup Exec provides software encryption, but it also supports some devices that provide hardware encryption with the T10 standard.

Backup Exec supports two security levels of encryption: 128-bit Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and 256-bit AES. The 256-bit AES encryption provides a stronger level of security because the key is longer for 256-bit AES than for 128-bit AES. However, 128-bit AES encryption enables backup jobs to process more quickly.

Hardware encryption using the T10 standard requires 256-bit AES.

About encryption

When you use hardware encryption, the data is transmitted from the host computer to the target device and then encrypted on the device. Backup Exec manages the encryption keys that are used to access the encrypted data.

Backup Exec only supports approved devices for T10 encryption.

Kindly VERIFY that your Tape DRIVE LTO 4  supports  T10 >>>
