Backups Slow with VirusScan 7.1 on File Server

We have McAfee VirusScan 7.1 installed on our main file sever. In order to get a decent backup throughput I have to either stop the VirusScan services on the file server or set the options within the VirusScan console to only check files that are being written to the file server.

This means that for the duration of the backups (which can run to 20 or so hours at the weekend), our file server is not sufficiently protected by anti-virus software.

Does anyone know of a way that I can still have virus scan running without a severe degradation in backup speed? How does everyone else get around anti-virus scanning on their file servers during backup?

Hello,

It is highly recommended to disable anti-virus scanning while backup operation is running as it results slow down of backup process.

By de-fragmenting the hard drive slow backup due to virus scan can be
resolved.
Please refer to the following technote for more information

Title:- "How to correct slow backup performance, slow virus or pre-job
scans, and agent initialization problems on fragmented Windows Nt and
Windows 2000 server partitions."
