Best Practices for Updating to 9.1

We are starting to run into issues with backing up Windows 2003 SP1 servers using BE 9.0 Build 4454. I understand from other posts here and on the support website that we need to update to 9.1 and install several hotfixes. Since we have 40 or so servers, updating the Remote Agent on all of them at once would be cumbersome. I have a few questions on Best Practices for updating to this version:

1. For the Remote Agent, are the agents backward compatible? IOW, I won't be able to update all agents at once. I will need several days to get this done.

2. I have seen posts here that indicate that a full restore for Windows 2003 SP1 might not be possible. Is this true?

3. What is the order in which the media server needs to be updated from 9.0 Build 4454 to 9.1 SP2 and hotfixes?

Any comments are welcome, thanks.

1. Yes they are. Though this isn't "recommended" there is no problem using an older agent. Some of our remote servers still use the 9.0 agent, where our media server is 9.1SP2. We do this because frankly I've seen too many people complain about problems after patching, so we only apply where necessary
2. I've never heard a single example of it working
3. We did this recently. Basically, you run the 9.1 installer, it will update MDAC then reboot. Then install 9.1, reboot. Install SP2, I ignored the reboot prompt and applied hotfix 49 to do one major reboot. I have not applied any other hotfixes.

Hi,

-Performing an upgrade from Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers to version 9.1 requires an upgrade of the media server and all remote agent and Options on remote computers.
After the upgrade of these components, a reboot of both the media server and the remote servers are required. It is not necessary to uninstall any Backup Exec components prior to performing the upgrade.

-While it is possible to perform some basic level backups between a 9.1 media server and a 9.0 remote agent, some options will not work in this configuration, therefore leaving mismatched agent versions is neither recommended nor supported.

- Refer this technote:

- You can download and installv9.1 using the following technotes:

# BEWS 9.1 is a free downloadable upgrade inclusive of previously installed agents and options from Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows Servers agents and options.

We have decided to upgrade to BE 10 and apply whatever hotfixes are required. Are there similar issues for pushing RANT and backing up Win2003 SP1 with v.10?

Hello,

After installing 10.0 you will also have to update the remote agents.

Thanks,
