Can I install Backup Exec 12.5 (the Core Server) on Windows XP?

Looking through the requirements, it seems that a "Server" OS is required for the Media Server.  Is this right?

I'm looking to backup maybe 7 or 8 servers.   And it would be silly to do this concurrently.  And even if I did, XP is licensed to handle 10 concurrent network connections to it (I'm not sure if this limitation is a factor in why Symantec is limiting compatibilityto the Server OSes).

Is it possible to save a little on cost and use XP Pro (instead of say Win Server 2003) as the base OS for the Backup Exec Media server?

Yes this can be done . Check the Software compatibility list http://support.veritas.com/docs/307063 at page 9.

Interesting.  Thanks.

I had looked here and XP wasn't listed:

Are there any caveats that I should know about running the Media Server on XP?

XP Professional (32bit / 64bit) is on Page 9. Be sure to have either Service Pack 2 or Service Pack 3 installed.
