Can't setup new "Backup-to-Disk Folder"?

I mapped the Z: drive to another server with a shared folder called \backups, but when I try to create a new backup folder it tells me:

"The system cannot find the path specified"

Does the folder have to be on the local server?
I'm logged in as admin on both servers, what's the problem here?

rather than specifying the location of the B2D folder as a drive letter, specify it as \\ServerName\Share\xxxx
