Catalog error - not enough disk space

Today I have an error message Final Error -0X0- Catalog error -ther is not enough disk space to write the on-disk catalog.

I have never had this message before, and have 58Gb of free space on the drive to which backups go. Why should this appear?
in the \veritas databk folder I have two folders called catalogs and data -all the sfiles in dat are over a year old -do I need them? and do I need more than one cataolog file?

Thanks - I made a new catalogs folder and it seems OK now.
